“Moving in the Spirit became more than a dance program to me. Moving in the Spirit became my home.”
– Mashunte Holmes, alumna
Dear Moving in the Spirit Family,
We have reflected deeply on “home” these past several years at Moving in the Spirit. As our programs grew in depth and capacity, we realized our beloved facility of 20 years at GlenCastle would no longer meet the needs of our evolving organization. So together with our families, staff and stakeholders, we envisioned a space in which our young people could truly soar.
In 2015, MARTA (Atlanta’s public transit system) and Atlanta developer, Columbia Ventures selected Moving in the Spirit as a community arts anchor for their new transit-oriented development (TOD) at the Edgewood/Candler Park rail station. Moving in the Spirit’s future home is the centerpiece of the mixed-use project, which is transforming a former parking lot into housing, greenspace, and community amenities.
On Wednesday, February 28, we inked that deal and officially signed our land lease!
Our new home, designed by renowned architects Perkins+Will, will be state-of-the-art and double our enrollment from 250 to 500 students. Positioned directly next to the MARTA rail line, the facility will meet the community’s need for transit-accessibility and broaden our reach to an additional 15,000 families each year through performances and workshops in our 150-seat theater, which will also serve as vital resource for Atlanta’s professional dance community. Most importantly, A Space to Soar will draw young people from across our city, from all walks of life, to join together, support one another, and build the skills they need to thrive.
We are thrilled to work with MARTA and Columbia Ventures on this innovative endeavor, exemplifying how the arts can unite communities, spur economic development, and empower youth.
We will break ground on our new home in late 2018. In the meantime, Moving in the Spirit will continue operating at our temporary location in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward, where we have activated the beautiful J.D. Sims Recreation Center as one of Atlanta’s Centers of Hope.
We are committed to keeping you abreast of our exciting progress as plans continue to unfold. We look forward to working in partnership with our new neighbors, MARTA, Columbia Ventures, and you, our Moving in the Spirit supporters, as we create a beautiful new home for our young people.
