Charles Garland, age 12, will perform with Men in Motion and GLOW in Motion dancers on March 14, 2020 in ‘Unity.’
This is your first year dancing at Moving in the Spirit. How do you like it?
It’s pretty fun. I feel like it’s a nice way to connect with your community and meet new people, make friends, and have a ton of fun.
Speaking of connection, the name of the performance you’re preparing for is ‘Unity.’ What does unity mean to you?
Being as one together, in a strong bond.
Can dancing create unity?
I think dancing creates unity because you’re getting to move with different people. It shows your emotions, and then you unite with other dancers.
Do you think there’s enough unity in the world right now?
No. I think we should stop fighting each other and work together, because I think the more we work together, the more things we could achieve.
What can you and other young people do to help create more unity in the world?
Be a good example.
What are you most looking forward to about the performance?
Dancing with my friends. I have two favorite dances, ‘Football Mania’ and ‘Trippy.’ In ‘Football Mania’ we get to do different formations from football and catch balls, sort of like what you’d be doing in a boot camp. My second favorite dance is ‘Trippy,’ and it’s smooth and flowing.
How do you want audiences to feel after they see you guys perform?
I want them to be mesmerized.
