Amber is an 18-year-old senior who has danced at Moving in the Spirit for three years. This is her second national tour with the Apprentice Corporation.
This is your last tour with Moving in the Spirit before leaving for college. What has made your time here unique?
“Everybody here works as a team, not as individuals, and puts in their ideas. It’s about everybody being respectful and adding their talents and potential.”
What excites you most about touring this year?
“I’m really looking forward to the American Dance Festival, because we’ll get to take many different classes from professionals. I’m excited for the versatility.”
Preparing for tour requires several weeks of seven-hour-a-day rehearsals. What have you learned about yourself during such an intense process?
“I’ve learned that I need to be able to push myself past my limits. This is especially important during tour. I want to use my skills this year to help on tour more, especially for the younger dancers.”
You’ve worked with several guest artists this year leading up to tour. What did you enjoy most about working with a range of artists?
“I enjoyed that the teaching styles of each artist were different than what I was used to. I loved getting to work with Leah Mann, Moving in the Spirit’s co-founder. She’s so funny, and she has so much energy. Her presence is unbelievable. She has such a loving spirit.”
You’ve talked a lot about collaboration. What has your artistic voice added to the tour performance?
“I’ve added choreography to the performance, which is great because I can really show what I’ve learned. Artistically, I’ve grown as a dancer, and I’m able to express that through my performance.”
What do you want audiences to experience at this year’s tour show?
“I hope they realize that we all dance together. We envision a message that we want to give and try to deliver every time.”
The theme of this year’s tour is ‘Stand Up.’ What do you stand for?
“I stand for all dancers who start late in life. It’s not age that determines success, it’s how hard you work. I’ve grown into a more powerful dancer over the past two years, and now I’m touring. Others can too.”
Come see Amber and her tour teammates give a stellar performance on Friday, June 26, 8 PM at 7 Stages Theatre.
