Taylor is an 18-year-old senior who has danced with Moving in the Spirit for three years. This is her first dance tour.
This is your last year dancing with Moving in the Spirit before leaving for college. What have you most enjoyed about dancing here?
“I enjoy the family bond we’ve created. I don’t get that from any other group.”
This is your first tour. What are you looking forward to most?
“I’m really looking forward to all of the performance opportunities, and to performing for people I don’t know.”
Preparing for tour requires several weeks of seven-hour-a-day rehearsals. What have you learned about yourself and your peers during such an intense process?
“I’ve learned that my stamina is really high. I’ll get tired, but I’ll keep going and keep working. With my peers, I’ve been surprised at how different we are from each other even though we’re so close. But at the same time, we’re all still the same.”
How do you see yourself stepping up as a leader on tour?
“My leadership challenge is to communicate more. On tour, I really want to stretch and be there for people, to ask if they need help. I have assignments, but I want to go further and do more than what I’m told to do.”
Several guest artists have come in to work with you before tour. What has been your favorite experience?
“I really enjoyed learning Sarah Beach’s piece, because the choreography is so fluid and never stops. I’m used to performing sharper movement, so it’s been a challenge for me to sustain the movement in her piece.”
What message do you want the audience to take away from your tour performance?
“I hope they understand the theme of our dances. They’re all different, but in some way they’re all about advocating and speaking up for yourself.”
The theme of this year’s tour is ‘Stand Up.’ What do you stand for?
“I stand for equality and gay rights. I want all people to feel valued like everyone else. No one is ‘less than.’ I want everyone to feel like they mean something to somebody.”
Taylor and her peers will deliver an inspiring performance in Atlanta on Friday, June 26, 8 PM at 7 Stages Theatre.
